Fixing blank recordings, no camera, or no mic audio

Diagnose and fix a recording with no screen content, a missing camera feed, or missing microphone audio.

Updated 2026-07-23 · AutoCast v3.0 · macOS 14+

Who this is for

Anyone whose AutoCast recording came out blank, silent, or missing the camera overlay.

Before you start

Know which symptom you’re seeing — the fix differs depending on whether it’s the screen, the camera, or the microphone that’s missing:

Steps

Blank or black screen recording

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording.
  2. Confirm AutoCast is listed and its toggle is enabled. If it’s missing, click + to add it, or re-trigger the permission prompt by clicking Record in AutoCast again.
  3. Relaunch AutoCast. macOS does not apply a Screen Recording permission change until the app fully quits and reopens — this is the single most common cause of a blank recording.

No camera feed

  1. Check that the camera is actually enabled for this recording in AutoCast’s Record panel — it’s an optional toggle, not on by default.
  2. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and confirm AutoCast is enabled. Relaunch AutoCast after changing it.
  3. Check for exclusive access conflicts. Some apps (video call software, other camera utilities) hold exclusive access to the camera while running. Quit other apps that might be using the camera, then reopen AutoCast.
  4. Confirm the correct camera is selected as the input device in AutoCast’s Record panel, if you have more than one connected (e.g. a built-in FaceTime camera and an external webcam).

No microphone audio

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and confirm AutoCast is enabled. Relaunch AutoCast after changing it.
  2. Check that the correct input device is selected in AutoCast’s Record panel — audio can be silently recorded from the wrong mic if you have multiple inputs (e.g. built-in mic vs. a USB or Bluetooth microphone).
  3. Check for another app holding exclusive access to the microphone, such as a call or conferencing app running in the background — quit it and try recording again.

What you should see

A live preview of your screen (and camera, if enabled) in the AutoCast recording window before you hit record, and a visible input level moving on the microphone indicator when you speak.
