Choose what to capture — screen, window, or app — and turn on camera and microphone before you hit record.
Updated 2026-07-23 · AutoCast v3.0 · macOS 14+
Who this is for
Anyone starting a new recording and deciding what to capture, or wondering why the camera or mic isn’t showing up in the preview.
Before you start
AutoCast installed and granted Screen Recording + Microphone permission (see First-launch permissions).
If you plan to include a camera overlay, grant Camera access too.
Steps
Open AutoCast and click Record. You’ll see options for what to capture: your entire screen, a single window, or a specific app.
Pick a capture source. Choose Screen to capture everything, Window to capture just one window, or App to follow a specific application even if you switch to another one briefly.
Toggle Microphone on or off. Your mic audio becomes the mic track in the timeline, and it’s also the source AutoCast uses to clone your voice for dubbing later.
Check the live preview. Before you start, confirm your screen/window, camera (if enabled), and audio level all look right in the preview pane.
Click Record (or use the countdown) to start. Do the thing you want to show — talk naturally and click through your app or website as normal. AutoCast watches every click to drive auto-zoom later.
Click Stop when you’re done. AutoCast saves the recording and takes you into the editor.
What you should see
A live preview of your screen (and camera, if enabled) with a visible audio level meter before you hit record, and a new project in the editor with screen, camera, and mic tracks on the timeline after you stop.
Common issues
Recording is blank — Screen Recording permission wasn’t granted. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable AutoCast, and restart the app.
No camera overlay — Camera was toggled off before recording started, or Camera permission was denied. Camera overlays can’t be added after the fact to a recording that didn’t capture one.
No mic audio track — Microphone permission was denied, or the toggle was off. Without a mic track, AutoCast can’t clone your voice — you can still add narration afterward with Post-record Narration in the dubbing step.
Wrong window got recorded — When capturing a specific App, switching to an unrelated app for an extended period can cause gaps; prefer Window mode if you need to stay strictly on one window.
